Home Visit Physiotherapy Amersham & Gerrards Cross

Travelling to a physiotherapy clinic is not always practical. You may be recovering from an operation, struggling with mobility, concerned about falling or simply more comfortable being assessed in your own home.

At Whitson Wellness Physiotherapy, I provide private home visit physiotherapy across:

  • Amersham
  • Prestwood
  • Great Missenden
  • Chesham
  • Little Chalfont
  • Chalfont St Giles
  • Chalfont St Peter
  • Gerrards Cross
  • Surrounding Buckinghamshire villages

Home physiotherapy is not only for elderly or housebound patients. It can also be particularly helpful after surgery, following a hospital admission, during recovery from illness or whenever travelling to a clinic would be difficult.

Every appointment is personally provided by me, Matt Whitson, an experienced Chartered Physiotherapist and owner of Whitson Wellness Physiotherapy.

What is home visit physiotherapy?

Home visit physiotherapy—sometimes called domiciliary physiotherapy—brings physiotherapy assessment, treatment and rehabilitation directly to your home or care setting.

The same clinical principles apply as they would during a clinic appointment. I will discuss your symptoms, understand your medical and surgical history, assess your movement and agree realistic rehabilitation goals with you.

The main difference is that everything takes place in your own environment.

This allows me to see how you manage the tasks that actually matter in daily life, such as:

  • Getting in and out of bed
  • Standing from your usual chair
  • Using stairs
  • Walking between rooms
  • Getting in and out of the shower
  • Using your walking aid
  • Accessing your garden
  • Entering or leaving your property

Your home environment can provide valuable information that is difficult to reproduce in a clinic.

Who can benefit from physiotherapy at home?

Home visits can support people with a wide variety of rehabilitation needs.

Physiotherapy following surgery

The first few weeks after an operation can be challenging. Pain, swelling, weakness, fatigue and reduced confidence may make travelling unnecessarily difficult.

Home physiotherapy may help following procedures such as:

  • Total hip replacement
  • Total or partial knee replacement
  • Fracture fixation
  • Foot and ankle surgery
  • Achilles-tendon surgery
  • Spinal surgery
  • Shoulder surgery
  • Abdominal or other major surgery affecting mobility

Treatment is guided by your surgeon’s instructions and any post-operative precautions. Rehabilitation may include mobility practice, progressive strengthening, range-of-movement work and advice on safely increasing everyday activity.

I can also liaise with your consultant or medical team when clarification or an update is required.

Reduced mobility and deconditioning

A period of illness, hospitalisation or reduced activity can lead to significant loss of strength and confidence.

Tasks that were previously straightforward—such as standing from a chair or walking to the kitchen—may suddenly feel difficult.

Home physiotherapy can provide a structured way to rebuild:

  • Lower-limb strength
  • Walking tolerance
  • Balance
  • Exercise capacity
  • Confidence with everyday movement
  • General independence

The rehabilitation programme is tailored to the person’s starting point. Exercises can be practised using the furniture, stairs and space already available at home.

Balance problems and falls

A fall, near-fall or increasing unsteadiness can reduce confidence and cause someone to restrict their activity. Unfortunately, moving less can contribute to further weakness and loss of balance.

A home assessment may consider:

  • Standing balance
  • Walking pattern
  • Leg strength
  • Turning and changing direction
  • Transfers from chairs and beds
  • Use of sticks, frames or other walking aids
  • Potential environmental risks
  • Confidence moving around the home

The aim is to improve safety while helping the person remain as active and independent as possible.

Musculoskeletal pain

Home visits may also be suitable for people experiencing:

  • Back pain
  • Hip or knee pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Muscle weakness
  • Joint stiffness
  • Pain affecting walking
  • Reduced mobility following an injury

If symptoms require imaging, medical review or another specialist opinion, I can advise on the appropriate next step.

Home physiotherapy is not only for elderly patients

Home visit physiotherapy is often associated with elderly care, but age alone does not determine whether someone will benefit.

Younger and working-age adults may prefer home physiotherapy because they:

  • Have recently undergone surgery
  • Cannot yet drive
  • Are using crutches or a walking boot
  • Are temporarily unable to use stairs safely
  • Are recovering from a fracture
  • Have significant pain when travelling
  • Need early rehabilitation before progressing to a clinic or gym
  • Require treatment in a familiar environment

Home visits can act as a bridge between hospital discharge and full clinic-based rehabilitation.

When travelling becomes easier and more advanced equipment is required, treatment can transition to the Whitson Wellness clinic and gym facilities in Amersham.

What happens during the first home physiotherapy appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your health, current difficulties and goals.

Where relevant, it is helpful to have the following available:

  • Hospital discharge paperwork
  • Consultant letters
  • Operation details
  • Imaging reports
  • Current medication information
  • Post-operative precautions
  • Details of recent falls or hospital admissions

The physical assessment will depend on your needs but may include:

  • Joint movement
  • Muscle strength
  • Walking
  • Balance
  • Chair transfers
  • Bed mobility
  • Stair assessment
  • Exercise tolerance
  • Use of walking aids

We will then agree a treatment and rehabilitation plan.

What treatment can be provided at home?

Home physiotherapy is adapted to the individual and may include:

  • A personalised rehabilitation programme
  • Strength and mobility exercises
  • Balance rehabilitation
  • Walking practice
  • Transfer practice
  • Stair assessment and training
  • Guidance on using walking aids
  • Hands-on physiotherapy when appropriate
  • Advice about pacing and activity progression
  • Falls-prevention strategies
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Support returning to outdoor walking
  • Guidance for relatives or carers

The purpose is not simply to complete a list of exercises during the appointment. Treatment should improve the movements and activities that are important to the patient.

What are the benefits of home physiotherapy?

No difficult journey

You do not need to arrange transport or manage a painful journey while recovering.

Assessment in your real environment

Rehabilitation can focus on your own chair, stairs, bed and walking routes rather than simulated clinic tasks.

Personalised one-to-one care

Appointments are tailored to your medical history, mobility, goals and home environment.

Support after hospital discharge

Home physiotherapy can help you begin or continue rehabilitation without waiting until travelling becomes easier.

Greater involvement for families and carers

With the patient’s agreement, relatives and carers can understand the rehabilitation plan and how to provide appropriate support.

A gradual route back to independence

Rehabilitation can progress from basic transfers and indoor walking to outdoor mobility, community access and clinic or gym-based exercise where appropriate.
